First of all, thank you again to everyone out there who has signed my petition and supported me on this issue. My parents and I have heard back from the Maine Principals’ Association (MPA) and we wanted to let everyone know the response. The official response from the tennis committee was to take “no action”. Apparently there is an alternate proposal from the MPA to eliminate the Cooperative Individual classification for all sports NEXT year and allow any sport to form a Cooperative Team. That’s great news… if it passes! The MPA will vote April 30th on this and we very much hope it does pass. Students and schools should have the opportunity to form a Cooperative Team for any sport.
Now the bad news. We are out of luck for this year at least. I’m still looking forward to participating with the team, even if it will only be as an individual this year. Hopefully I’ll even get to play a match or two, even if it won’t count. I’ll also be keeping fingers crossed that the April 30th vote passes so that I and anyone else who wishes gets the opportunity to participate as full members of a team next year. Although I feel bad for the seniors who won’t get that chance. Thanks again to everyone who supported us though. There is actually one more thing you can do to help. If you live in Maine, we encourage you to contact your local high school principals to ask them to vote yes to cooperative teams for all sports at the April 30th vote.
